Presidents Report

Hello from Bristow, Oklahoma.

I hope this letter finds everyone doing well and avoiding the heat as best as possible. We have received some much needed rains and I hope that no-one has been caught on the lakes when the storms moved through. We would like to see everyone at the Fall Meeting on October 18, 2014 at the Okmulgee County Fairgrounds this year.

If you were unable to attend the Spring Meeting we missed you. However, the F.T.O. had an unprecedented 50% turn out at the meeting, which was very good to see for a Spring Meeting. Aaron Ghaemi, our Fur Bearer Biologist was in attendance to speak to everyone about what’s been going on at the Department level to improve regulations and improve fur harvesting for Oklahoma trappers. Such as the following, this will take effect November 1, 2014 for the upcoming season:

• The bag limit on river otters has increased to four, and river otters may now be taken statewide. See page 37.
• Enclosed trigger traps are permitted on 35 additional WMAs. See Special Area Regulations section of the Oklahoma hunting Regulations.
• Certification testing and licenses are now required for all nuisance wildlife control operators

Mr. Ghaemi was presented with a plaque of appreciation from the F.T.O. for his efforts in promoting the heritage of trapping in Oklahoma. Unfortunately, since the spring meeting, Mr. Ghaemi has taken a job offer from another company and is no longer our fur bearer biologist. But we will wish him the best of luck in his new career and tell him “God Speed”. Thank you for what you did Aaron.

Mr. Leon Melton, Mr. Billy (B.J.) Johnson and Mrs. Janice Johnson were also presented with plaques of appreciation from the F.T.O. for their past, current and continued efforts in promoting fur trapping in Oklahoma to all generations. These members set the standard for the rest of us to emulate in regards to this wonderful heritage we all have the ability to share with other folks and younger generations. The F.T.O. thanks each of you.

Mr. Sam McGill, Mr. Joe Stanbro and Mr. Billy (B.J.) Johnson were presented with their Lifetime Membership plaques from the F.T.O. at the spring meeting as well. I would like to personally thank each of you for your continued efforts in promoting Oklahoma trapping and assisting in the guidance, directions and decisions of this organization. I would also like to thank Mrs. Janice Johnson and Mrs. Jennifer Murray for an outstanding meal which they served at the spring meeting. Ladies, it was DELICIOUS and is still being talked about. I receive complements from the members for the food and your efforts to ensure everyone was fed, and fed well. Thank you.

We would also like to thank Mr. Jeb Hollingshead and sons for bringing their company, Okie Cable & Trap Supply to the spring meeting as vendors. And thanks Jeb for the input and advice you gave as well.

As this letter finds it was to the readers eyes, the F.T.O. Fall meeting, trapping season and Fur Auctions will be just around the corner.

The Fall Meeting is scheduled for October 18, 2014 at the Okmulgee County Fairgrounds this year. And there will be vendors on hand to provide you with trapping supplies. You might save on some shipping if you plan to purchase your supplies from Okie Cable & Trap Supply by giving Jeb and the boys a call with your orders and requirements at 918-429-4648 or visit them on their website at

The F.T.O. will host a single fur auction in for the upcoming season which will be on March 7, 2015 located at the Okmulgee County Fairgrounds. So please keep that date in mind.

Great News here … the F.T.O. will sponsor a 50/50 pot split with the team that wins the F.T.O. 1st Annual Coyote Challenge this year. The prize will be presented at the spring 2015 Meeting. This is a team event at a cost of $100 per team to enter. All teams must sell their coyotes at the 2015 Fur Auction in order to be counted. More information, rules and entry forms can be downloaded from the F.T.O. website on this page:

I myself will be participating in this event, which will run from December 1, 2014 through February 28, 2015. All legally trapped coyotes during this period will be counted as they are sold at the fur auction, providing they meet the criteria in the rules of the contest. All entry fees for this event must be paid no later than December 1, 2014 in order to participate.

In closing … the F.T.O. has unfortunately lost the V.P. and Treasurer. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson will be moving back to her home in Southwest Oklahoma. This move has been a long time coming and past due. We wish these two outstanding members the very best in what lies ahead for them. Even though I am not eager to have them move away from me (they were just up the road a piece) … we are very happy for them. Both will resign their positions on the Executive Council but Janice has agreed to continue to be the NTA Director and come back as an F.T.O. Director as well. With this, expect to see some changes on the “Officers Page” of the website, along with changes in seating and introductions at the meetings. For instance, our two of our Lifetime Members, Mr. Joe Stanbro and Mr. Sam McGill have agreed to move up to fill the vacancies. Joe will be the interim Vice President while Sam will assume the Treasurer Position. Thank you both for coming forward to assist.

Remember to take a kid or twelve out hunting, fishing or trapping with you when you go … the activity could literally have a positive effect on their lives and how they grow up. Be safe, and we’ll see you at the Fall Meeting.

Reginald Murray, President
